I got a great email from a client recently who regularly started incorporating yoga blocks into his fitness routine during the pandemic. Although we had spoke a number of times about adding a yoga block for our balance work, it’s like a lightbulb went off when he was practicing at home and working on some pretty advanced postures.
His email was simple, “I love my yoga blocks!” with a link to a recent article from Hugger Mugger about Balancing in Warrior 3. That says it all. I responded encouragingly as this very well-read and successful professional had an ‘ah ha’ moment, that I myself could only grasp with that same physical experience. My own ego would look right and left next to me in classes and decide that those using the yoga props were injured, less capable or inexperienced. Turns out, they were the ones truly understanding their potential and how to support themselves in that practice.
We all start out letting ourselves believe the blocks are a “crutch” or for those who are less studied, but yoga blocks are an actual metaphor for the purpose of yoga practice. If we are willing to let go of our ego’s expectations, we can find uncountable growth opportunities.
